Polari Lesson 5: Verbs

Polari uses a wide range of verbs to describe both everyday actions, as well as actions specific to gay culture and the entertainment industry. In this lesson, some of these verbs alongside example sentences will be taught. As well as this, the way verbs can be conjugated will also be covered.


Varda  Look

Varda this fabulosa view.


Chant  Sing

Let’s chant a bijou songette.


Jogger  Entertain

The joggering omee’s multi bona with the striller.


Troll  Walk

We trolled the streets of Eine in our gildy clobber.


Scarper  Escape, Run

Scarper! Rozzers!


Fake  Make, Do

He faked the slang dressed as a clown.


Savvy  Know

I nanti savvy the lingo.


Palaver  Talk

We palavered for hours on end.

As you may see in the above example sentences, the way that verbs in Polari are conjugated follow English language conventions. Let’s take for example the verb ‘varda’ which is conjugated in the 3rd person singular form, the present participle form and past tense.
